Views of Cleveland, Lake Erie and both the West Pierhead Lighthouse built in 1911 (shown here at right) and the East Pierhead Lighthouse (shown below) built in 1910 as seen from Whiskey Island and Wendy Park near Whiskey Island Marina

Cleveland on April 26th, 2008 included photos of the Cleveland skyline while the Cleveland Indians were playing the New York Yankees as you can also see the DirecTV Blimp flying overhead and near Progressive Field (the Indians won 4-3 to a crowd of 35,756 fans at Progressive Field). The name of Whiskey Island dates back to the 1830s when a distillery was built on the island.  Also on the North Eastern tip of the island and built in 1940, the Whiskey Island/Wendy Park Coast Guard Station (now in ruins but with plans underway to rebuild this area from efforts by the Wendy Park Foundation) was designed by Milton Dyer who also designed Clevelands City Hall and the Cleveland Athletic Club.  A rare photo opportunity was the perfect timing of the grand entry of the 634' long ship, "American Republic" built in 1981 and arriving for another 20,000 tons (more than any other carrier) of iron ore!

Location of photos: The above is an arial view of the entry point of the Cuyahoga River by Whiskey Island (left side or west bank of river) and the 1st bridge to be seen on the Cuyahoga River. (Click photo above for google arial view/map)
